Bean Feed is a proud tradition in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources to celebrate our student, faculty and staff award recipients and to thank our generous donors. With the support of our donors, the College of Agriculture and Bioresources awarded $1.5 million in scholarships, bursaries and awards in 2021!
The first Bean Feed was held 83 years ago as a simple gathering over a dinner of baked beans. It has evolved over the years and in 2021, we're celebrating Bean Feed online!

Adeline and William Haberman Memorial Scholarship
In 1995, Mr. Herb Haberman of Watrous, SK established a trust fund in memory of his parents that provides an annual scholarship to a third or fourth year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student in crop science, soil science or agronomy.

Agriculture Students Association Awards
Award recipients must demonstrate involvement in the agricultural community and a commitment to making the agricultural industry a better place to work and learn.

Albert and Beatrice Trew Memorial Scholarship
Friends and family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Trew established a fund in 1992 to provide a scholarship to Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students in their second, third or fourth year. The Trews were long-time Lemsford area farmers.

Alexander and Jean Auckland Postgraduate Award in Agriculture
Alexander and Jean Auckland, farmers in the Saskatoon area, gifted a joint life insurance policy in 1993 to be used to help students in the college.

Alexander Malcolm Shaw Memorial Graduate Scholarship
Established by Anne Gordon Shaw Hudson, in memory of her father, a member of the faculty from 1911 to 1937, and Dean of the College from 1931 to 1937. This award is available to students pursuing graduate studies in animal production and/or nutrition; feed, meat and/or dairy science within the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Andjelic Land Graduate Award in Agricultural Research
This award was established by Robert Andjelic to reward academic achievement of graduate students at the College of Agriculture and Bioresources conducting research with the potential to significantly advance production agriculture.

Arnold and Emily Robinson Scholarship
This award was established with a bequest made by the late Mr. Arnold Robinson to acknowledge academic achievement and encourage continuing improvement.

Barbara and Frank Pavelich Postgraduate Scholarship in Soil Science
In 1990, Barbara Pavelich of Kenaston established this fund to support research on soils, soil erosion, and other practical soil problems related to the operation of family farms.

BASF Canada Scholarship in Agriculture
This award recognizes the academic achievement of students in second or third year of the BSc agribusiness or BSA agronomy major. Funded annually by BASF Canada Inc.

Beatrice Murray Entrance Scholarship
Beatrice Murray (BSA '45, MSc '47) established by bequest a trust fund to provide a scholarship to a female student entering the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program. The trust fund has subsequently been added to by Mr. and Mrs. Vic Murray of Watrous, SK.

Bert Hargrave Scholarship
In 1996, the estate of Herbert T. Hargrave funded a scholarship for students entering year two, three or four of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program. Mr. Hargrave was a 1942 graduate who devoted his life to cattle ranching and public service.

Bert Salloum Scholarship in Agricultural Economics
Mr. Salloum was Saskatoon Board of Trade commissioner for 23 years. In 1986, the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce established an annual scholarship in his name and in recognition of the impact of agriculture on the business community of Saskatoon, to support a student entering fourth-year agricultural economics.

Bill and Margaret Brewster Scholarship
The family of the late Bill and Margaret Brewster established this scholarship to honour the legacy of the centennial Brewster family farm near Birch Hills, SK. This scholarship recognizes the academic achievement of a graduate student pursuing a MSc or PhD in the Department of Soil Science within the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

C.M. ‘Red’ Williams Graduate Scholarships
Honouring Dr. Charles M. (Red) Williams, who taught in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science for over 50 years, these scholarships support students in Animal and Poultry Science and encourage graduate student research in crops, animal production and agricultural policy with the potential to improve sustainable water use in the agricultural sector.

C. Paul and Marianne M. Ziehlke Postgraduate Bursary in Agriculture
In 1993, Mrs. Marianne Ziehlke of North Battleford, SK, established this fund to assist deserving and academically proficient postgraduate agriculture students.

Canada Wide Science Fair Scholarship
Awarded to a student with intent to major in one of the natural science programs. Preference may be given to students who have participated in the Canada-Wide Science Fair or a Regional Science Fair at least once during their last four years of high school.

Carlson Scholarship in Renewable Resource Management
Mr. Gary Carlson (BSA '61, MSc '64) established this scholarship to recognize academic achievement of a student in the third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Science in renewable resource management degree program.

Charles and Verna Stewart Memorial Award
A contribution from Cheryl Perry and Lyle Stewart (children of Verna and Charles Stewart), in memory of their parents, recognizes students entering their final year of study who wish to farm after graduation.

Established by Charlotte Cook, in memory of her father, to encourage students with good academic records to pursue student leadership activities.

Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan Award in Agriculture
This award was established to encourage and recognize interest in the poultry industry, by providing support to two students enrolled in a degree or diploma program in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Class of ’43 60th Anniversary Award
Established with donations from the graduating class of 1943, this scholarship is awarded to students pursuing graduate degrees in an area related to sustainable agriculture.

In memory of Donald Tait, a School of Agriculture graduate and founding member of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, this award recognizes the academic achievement of a graduate student at the College of Agriculture and Bioresources with a research interest in pulse crops.

Established in 1985 by Mr. W. J. Copeland of Rosetown, this scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest average who is majoring in Crop Science and entering their final year.

Daniel Geddes Graduate Scholarship in Plant Sciences
This award was established by Keith Geddes and David Geddes in honour of their father, a farmer from Paynton, SK, who worked in cooperation with the former Department of Horticulture from the 1940s through to the 1960s. The award recognizes the academic achievement of graduate students in the Department of Plant Sciences, giving preference to students with horticultural research projects. This scholarship received matching funds from the Government of Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Program.

David J. Welch Memorial Prize
This award has been offered annually since 1996 to the student who attains the highest academic standing in the biological engineering courses in the first year of the diploma program.

Dean and Audrey Pollard Scholarships in Agriculture
This award was established by Dean Pollard to recognize the academic achievement of students in an undergraduate degree program.

Derek Kuffert Memorial Award
Established by friends and family of Derek Kuffert, this memorial award recognizes the academic achievement of undergraduate students, with a major or minor in soil science, who have demonstrated a commitment to community activities and/or leadership skills.

Dollie Hantelman Agricultural Scholarships
In 1987, the Dollie Hantelman Fund was established by a bequest from the late Florence Kathryn (Dollie) Hantelman of Kyle, SK. The fund supports undergraduate and graduate students.

Donald and Lois Forsberg Scholarship in Plant Sciences
This award recognizes the academic achievement of an undergraduate student majoring in Plant Sciences who has graduated from a Saskatchewan high school.

Douglas Christie Ferguson Fund Scholarship
The estate of Douglas Christie Ferguson provided capital to fund a scholarship program for students entering the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program. Mr. Ferguson was a farmer and International Harvester dealer in the North Battleford area.

Dow Agrosciences Scholarships in Agriculture
In memory of Barry Pasloski, Dow Agrosciences established a trust fund in 1989 to provide two annual scholarships to third or fourth-year students who have shown significant academic improvement.

Downey Family Graduate Scholarship in Plant Sciences
Established by Keith and Edna Downey, the Downey Family Scholarship rewards academic achievement of graduate students in the Department of Plant Sciences. Dr. Downey began his career as a research officer with Agriculture Canada in 1952 where he worked with numerous crops and is most recognized for his contributions to the canola sector.

Dr. Alfred E. Slinkard Postgraduate Scholarship
The Saskatchewan Pulse Crop Development Board provides an annual donation to promote academic excellence in the area of pulse crop research. The award is named in honour of pioneering pulse breeder Dr. Alfred Slinkard.

Dr. Keith Downey Undergraduate Scholarship in Agriculture
SaskCanola provides an annual gift to support a scholarship in honour of Dr. Keith Downey. Dr. Downey (BSA ‘51) worked with Agriculture Canada his entire career as a breeder and co-breeder of 13 canola varieties and five condiment mustard varieties. Dr. Downey and longtime collaborator, Baldur Stefasson, became known as the “Fathers of Canola.” The scholarship supports continuing undergraduate students whose families are in the canola growers’ industry.

Dr. Bernie Sonntag Memorial Award in Agricultural Economics
This award was established by Mrs. Mary Sonntag, loving wife of the late Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Sonntag in recognition of his passion and enthusiasm for his work in ag-economics and to support the value he placed on higher education. It recognizes a graduate student in Agricultural Economics who grew up on or has very strong ties to a Canadian prairie family farm.

Dr. Robert E. Redmann Memorial Scholarship in Plant Sciences
A donation from Mrs. Elaine Redmann in memory of Dr. Robert E. Redmann, professor of plant sciences from 1968 to 2000, established this award to recognize academic achievement of graduate students in the area of plant sciences.

Edwin Wells and Walter and Jean (Wells) Curry Award
Established by G. Edwin Wells, and Walter and Jean Curry, this significant award recognizes an exceptional student entering or enrolled full-time in their final year of a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. Criteria stipulated by the donors may be based on, but not limited to, high academic achievement, exceptional leadership and demonstrated commitment and involvement in the community. Recipients will have graduated from a high school in Saskatchewan, Alberta or Manitoba.

Established in honour of Dr. Eric Putt, who held a distinguished career in sunflower research, this award recognizes academic excellence of a graduate student from the Department of Plant Sciences with a research focus related to specialty crops.

Ernest Winn McKenzie Scholarship
Established in 1995 as a gift from the estate of Kathleen Rose McKenzie in memory of her husband, this award goes to a student entering year two, three or four of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program specializing in soils or agronomy.

In memory of her husband, a pioneer farmer in the Saltcoats area, Donna Kitsch established a fund to provide an annual scholarship to a student entering third or fourth-year crop science.

Established in 1946 by the late F. J. Fear, a pharmacist in Nipawin, this scholarship is awarded to the student with highest academic standing in the first three years of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, soil science major.

Forsberg Scholarship in Plant Sciences
Open to undergraduate students majoring in Plant Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources. To be eligible students must have graduated from a Saskatchewan high school.

Frank and Freda Riecken Scholarship in Soil Science
In memory of her late husband, Mrs. Freda Riecken established this scholarship to recognize a student entering his or her third year of any degree in the Department of Soil Science.

F.V. MacHardy Graduate Fellowship in Grasslands Management
Dr. Fenton MacHardy (BE 1950) established this award to recognize the research excellence of students pursuing a Master of Science (MSc) degree or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), specializing in grasslands research, in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Gerhard Rakow Legacy Award
Dr. Gerhard Rakow was an internationally recognized plant breeder who had major impact on the Canadian canola and condiment mustard industries. This award was established to support graduate research in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources, pertaining to plant breeding.

Graham A. Jones Scholarship
Established through a gift from Professor Emeritus Graham A. Jones, the scholarship recognizes a third or fourth year student in the BSA degree program majoring in Food and Bioproduct Sciences with a demonstrated interest in microbiology.

Hanson Award in Soil Science
The family of the late Mr. Ira Hanson and Mr. Maurice Hanson, Sr., contributed funds to establish an award fund in their memory. The Hanson brothers, long-time farmers from the Harris area, provided considerable support to the university during their lifetime.

Harold Horner Graduate Scholarship in Agriculture
Norval Horner established this award in memory of his father, Harold Horner (BSc 1933, MSc 1936), who was raised on a farm near Creelman, SK. Following WW II Mr. Horner joined the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture and was deputy minister for over 20 years, under three governments and five different ministers. He was then appointed as executive director of rail rationalization. Harold also served as chair of the Saskatchewan Research Council and was a key figure in bringing the WCVM to USask. Harold’s honours included an Honorary Doctor of Laws from USask, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, Distinguished Agrologist and election to the Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Harris and Lauretta and Raymond Earl Parr Memorial Scholarship in Agriculture
In 1996, Ilo Mohr Parr, in memory of her parents, established this fund to be used for scholarships for postgraduate agriculture students.

Harvey Scholarship
In 1999, Dr. Ross Buschlen Harvey (BSc 1935, MSc 1938, PhD [McGill]), in memory of his parents, provided funds by bequest to recognize academic achievement of undergraduate students who, through their programs of study, are contributing to the development of agriculture in Saskatchewan.

This award was established in memory of Henry and Erica Martynse to recognize the academic achievement of graduate students engaged in research related to the development of new crop varieties and improved crop agronomy.

Howard Lindberg Memorial Award
This award was established by the Saskatoon Community Foundation at the wish of Howard Lindberg, and in his memory, to honour his life as a farmer and his thoughtful and generous spirit. It is awarded to diploma students who graduated from a small rural high school.

Ira K. Mumford Scholarship in Agriculture
Mr. Mumford served in leadership roles for numerous agricultural organizations and his contributions helped shape the western Canadian agriculture sector. This scholarship recognizes the academic achievement of a student in any degree program in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

J.D. MacFarlane Scholarship
This award was established in 1982 by John D. MacFarlane to be awarded to a postgraduate student on the basis of academic achievement. The recipient must have been a Saskatchewan resident for the last five years.

James Donald Hardin Scholarship
Established in 1989 by Violet Maud Hardin, in memory of her husband, James Donald Hardin, this award is offered annually to students entering their second year of the Diploma in Agriculture program.

Jickling Agricultural Scholarship
In 1989, Fred, Robert and Brian Jickling and their families made a capital contribution to the University of Saskatchewan, the income from which is to be used for an annual scholarship to a second, third or fourth-year crops, soils or agronomy student. The award was established in honour of Alex and Ella Jickling, pioneer farmers in the Brock district of Saskatchewan.

Jim Anderson Scholarship in Agriculture
Jim Anderson, who graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture in 1937 and farmed for 50 years in the Conquest, SK area, established this scholarship in 1997 to recognize academic achievement of students entering the Diploma in Agriculture program.

John Baerg Award
In 2006, John E. Baerg donated funds to establish the John Baerg Scholarship Fund to recognize post-graduate students with a demonstrated interest in teaching activity and who are conducting research in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

John Hickie Scholarship in Agriculture and Bioresources
This award was established to recognize John Hickie (Dip. Agrc. ’56, BSA ’59) and his gift of the Perseverance Farm to the College of Agriculture and Bioresources. It is awarded for high academic achievement to continuing undergraduate students in the college.

John Mitchell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to the first-year student with the highest average. This award was established in 1958 in honour of Dr. John Mitchell (BSA '24), former head of the University of Saskatchewan Department of Soil Science, 1934-1955.

Karen Tanino Horticulture Science Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2018 by Professor Karen Tanino, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, to recognize the academic achievement of a fourth-year student majoring in horticulture science.

Kelly Aulie Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Kelly Aulie (BSA '88), friends and business associates established a fund to provide an annual scholarship to a student entering third or fourth-year animal science who has made a sports, social or leadership contribution to the college.

L.H. Hantelman Postgraduate Scholarship
This scholarship was established by a bequest from the late Louis H. Hantelman to provide scholarships to students pursuing post-graduate studies in agriculture.

Larry Janzen Memorial Scholarship
Mrs. Doreen Janzen established this award in her late husband’s memory. Mr. Janzen worked closely with the USask Crop Development Centre and was the founding chair of the Seager Wheeler Historical Farm Society. This award recognizes the academic achievement of an undergraduate degree student, specializing in plant sciences.

Major Alfred Frank Mantle Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honour the memory of Major Alfred Frank Mantle, deputy minister, Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture (1910-1915). The scholarship recognizes an undergraduate student in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources who demonstrates academic achievement, as well as leadership, innovation and commitment to providing the livelihood of farm families.

Marc Delage Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honours Marc Delage (Dip. Agrc.’06, BSA ’08) and his passion for agriculture and community involvement. Established by his family, the award recognizes the academic achievement of well-rounded second- or third-year undergraduate students who have achieved personal growth through involvement in a community or organizational activity.

Martin Pedersen and Family Postgraduate Scholarship
Beginning in 1982, Mr. Martin Pedersen and family of Star City, SK, made donations to recognize the contributions of the University of Saskatchewan to the training and development of several members of the Pedersen family. This scholarship is to provide support to students pursuing studies in agricultural sciences.

This scholarship was established in 2019 by brothers Kent Mickleborough (BSA Ag Econ '90) and Andrew Mickleborough (MSc Ag Econ '97) from Eston, SK to recognize graduate students undertaking thesis research in agricultural policy or transportation in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

This award is offered annually to undergraduate students who are majoring in food and bioproduct sciences.

Palliser Environmental Consulting Award in Renewable Resource Management
This award was established in 2020 by soil and reclamation specialists Javan and Kendra Fisher (BSC RRM), who own and operate Palliser Environmental Consulting. This award recognizes the academic achievement of a fourth-year renewable resource management student who demonstrates the benefits of field study experience in building the practical aspects required for a career in the resource science sector.

Pat Toderian Scholarship in Animal Science
This fund was established in 1981 by friends and business associates of the late Mr. Pat Toderian, a long-time livestock order buyer in Saskatoon. Professor Emeritus Hartley Furtan Award
Established by Trevis McConaghy (BComm '00, BSA '98) in honour of Professor Hartley Furtan, this award recognizes the academic achievement of rural Saskatchewan students who are involved in volunteerism and/or community while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

Purdy Postgraduate Scholarship
Established in 1984 in memory of Purdy family members involved in agriculture, this scholarship is awarded to students pursuing post-graduate studies in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Putnam Family Memorial Award
Established in 2005 as a bequest from the estate of Helen Tabbutt (née Putnam), this scholarship has been named to memorialize her family, parents and siblings, and is awarded to students pursuing post-graduate studies in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Rene Vandeveld Postgraduate Scholarship in Crop Science
In 1985, the late Rene Vandeveld, who farmed in the Viscount, SK area for 45 years, left funds to the University of Saskatchewan to provide post-graduate agricultural scholarships and to support crop science research.

Robert and Maude Hale Scholarship
Established in 2004 as a gift from the estate of Mrs. Mary Tuckey in memory of her parents, Robert and Maude Hale, this award has been designated to students entering the College of Agriculture and Bioresources with a high average.

Robert T. Armstrong Scholarship
This award, established by a bequest from Verna E. Armstrong, may be awarded to continuing undergraduate or postgraduate students.

Roderick Alan McLean Memorial Award
Mrs. Muriel McLean and the estate of the late Mr. Roderick McLean have established an award in crop science in Mr. McLean’s memory. They farmed in the Grand Coulee district from 1946 until 1992. Mr. McLean was a registered seed grower and participated in many college courses for producers.

Ron Gallaway Memorial Scholarship
This award was established by Marguerite Gallaway, wife of Ronald Gallaway (DipAg '48). Ronald Gallaway was a lifelong farmer and very active in his home community of Estevan and beyond. The award recognizes the academic achievement of agriculture diploma program graduates, who have decided to pursue degree programs in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Ross Johnson Memorial Scholarship
Family and friends of Ross Johnson established this award in his memory. Mr. Johnson had a strong connection with the agricultural community and received his diploma from the college in 1979. This award recognizes scholastic merit of a student in the second year of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture majoring in animal or poultry science, who has received the top mark in the 200-level Livestock and Poultry Production class.

Rossnagel Scholarship for Academic Improvement
In 2000, Brian and Laurel Rossnagel established an annual scholarship for a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program after demonstrating significant academic improvement in third year.

Russell Fisher Scholarship
Mr. Russell Fisher (BSA '49) established an annual scholarship in recognition of the help he received at an early age and of his lifelong commitment to agriculture to help others pursue their education in the college.

Mr. Samuel N. Horner of Creelman, SK endowed a scholarship fund starting in 1956. Mr. Horner served on the Board of Governors at the University of Saskatchewan.

This scholarship was established through a bequest from William Manley Farley. Mr. Farley (DipAg '50) devoted his life to farming and had a strong belief in contributing to the agricultural industry. He was active in numerous agricultural organizations and in 1998 was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame.
