University of Saskatchewan Insect Research Facility
Located in the Agriculture Building on the University of Saskatchewan Saskatoon campus, the University of Saskatchewan Insect Research Facility (USIRF) is a 500-square-foot insect quarantine facility. Designed to meet Canadian Food Inspection Agency Plant Pest Containment Level-2A (CFIA PPC-2A) requirements, this facility allows researchers to study non-native insects and pathogens that pose a potential threat to Western Canadian crops, forestry and natural ecosystems. USIRF offers chamber space rentals for both university-affiliated and external researchers.
The bio-secure insect-rearing and quarantine facility employs strict mechanical and operating safeguards to prevent accidental release and cross-contamination of harmful species. USIRF contains six climate-controlled chambers for sustaining insects and infested plants, along with dedicated space for conducting research. In addition to the core resources, USIRF provides access to specialized laboratory equipment and fee-based services to assist researchers needs.
This facility is authorized to conduct research on all non-regulated plant pests and pathogens, as well as CFIA-approved PPC-2 arthropods and pathogens listed in the facility’s program intent. Requests for new plant pest containment materials can be submitted through USIRF and may only be used upon CFIA approval.
As a CFIA-regulated biocontainment facility, USIRF operates under strict compliance with federal regulations and policies. All approved users will undergo mandatory training to ensure adherence to regulations and policies before conducting any research.
