FREE: No till for home gardens
Gardening General
No till gardening involves never rototilling or digging the soil in your garden and using mulch in flower beds, around trees and shrubs, and in vegetable gardens. Transitioning to no till raises lots of questions: Why do trees and shrubs need mulch? How do I amend my soil? Shouldn’t the soil be soft in order to plant? How do I plant seeds or transplants in mulch? How do I hill potatoes in this type of garden? How do I add compost if the soil is covered in mulch? Helen will answer these questions and show you how to install, manage and maintain no till flower beds, tree and shrub borders, and vegetable gardens. Discover how the no till method improves the structure and health of your soil, increases yields, and reduces problems with pests and diseases. You’ll use far less fertilizer and water, and best of all, your weekly weeding chore will take three minutes, not three hours.

About your Instructor
Speaker: Helen Shook
Helen worked at Gardenline and Gardening at USask from 2017 – 2024. Helen is a Prairie Horticulture Certificate graduate and a Master Gardener. Now semi-retired, she and her husband recently moved to a small town in southern Ontario to be close to their family and friends. While she misses the prairies, she is reacquainting herself with the southern Ontario ecosystem, where she grew up. Helen likes to say that “the secret to great gardening is looking things up”, and so is enjoying learning about the flora and fauna at her new home and making ambitious plans for re-landscaping her yard and garden. She has already found a good source for mulch.
