FREE - Compost 101: Scraps to Soil

2-hour class. Compost is a vital part of building and maintaining healthy garden soil. This course will give you a solid understanding of how to make rich compost at home out of kitchen scraps and yard waste. We will learn the basic, 5-step recipe for a successful compost pile as well as how to troubleshoot common problems. We will also cover how to get a compost pile to heat up, and when that is necessary. In addition to discussing compost bins and piles we will also talk about several alternative techniques such as trench composting, mulch, vermicompost and compost tea. There will be time for questions at the end of the session.

About your Instructor
Lisa Howse is the Compost Education Coordinator with the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council (SWRC), a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people and organizations make less garbage. The SWRC also coordinates the Saskatoon Compost Coaches on behalf of the City of Saskatoon. Lisa is passionate about reducing waste, protecting the environment and building healthy soil.
Format
This class is offered in an online, live-stream format that you can access from your computer, phone or tablet. Your distance class will include your instructor and their presentation live on-screen and the ability for you to ask questions through the course chat. You will not receive a recording nor handouts for this class, but we're confident you will get good educational value.
