The Mysterious Trilliums and Their Friends
Gardening General
2-hour online class. Shady locations can be challenging for gardeners and many of us have grown weary of the most common plants on offer for such spaces. Are you looking for something stunning and a bit unusual? Long regarded as unsuitable for the prairie garden, trilliums are proving that in fact, they are extremely hardy, long-lived, and incredibly beautiful. Once classified in the lily family, trilliums have now been placed in their own, separate family and they offer marvelous blooms, often attractive foliage, and they are surprisingly easy to grow. They also have some very beautiful and worthwhile relatives, including the stunning (and highly toxic) smooth camas, the enigmatic beargrass of the high mountains, and the tropical looking false hellebores. If your garden is wanting for something reliable and unusual that gets better every year, you might need to plant some trilliums! Join us for a prairie-centric exploration of these overlooked and wonderful plants!
$20 plus GST for a 2 hour, live-streamed class. Registration is for a single student in one household. If multiple students will be viewing from the same location, each additional student is $10. Course fees are non-refundable. Class times are in Saskatchewan time - CST, no daylight savings.
Registration closes one hour before the class starts. Register here or email us at conference.events@usask.ca. Office hours are 8:00 am - 4:00 pm and any emails after this time will be answered the next business day.
About your Instructor
Lyndon Penner grew up in Saskatchewan and began gardening at a very young age. He began working in the nursery industry at the age of 16 and by 20 he was instructing horticultural classes. Now an independent landscape consultant and garden designer, Lyndon has been much in demand as a guest speaker for gardening groups and societies and has lectured at the U. of S., UBC, Olds College, and the Calgary Zoo Botanic Garden. He has written for many gardening publications as well as three best-selling books about gardening in a short growing season. You may also have heard him talking about gardening on CBC radio. When not busy in his own garden or someone else's, Lyndon works as a botanical interpreter in Waterton Lakes National Park and as a tour guide at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge.
Format
This class is offered in an online, live-stream format that you can access from your computer, phone or tablet. Your distance class will include your instructor and their presentation live on-screen and the ability for you to ask questions through the course chat. You will not receive a recording nor handouts for this class, but we're confident you will get good educational value.
Our students report the technology is quite simple to use both on computers and on personal devices like tablets and phones. We will send you instructions one hour before the class along with a contact help you in case there are any issues connecting. It's been remarkably stable for everyone with a strong internet connection. If you have a weak internet connection you might have audio problems, though we've only had this issue with people in isolated areas. Since there is a call-in option for sound, you will still be able to hear but you may not be able to see the instructor and slides if you have a poor internet connection.
