Black Flowers
Gardening General
2-hour online class. Lots of us like to use dark colours in the garden; plants with purple foliage, or deep blues, or very dark shades of green. What about actually using black in the garden? Did you know there are a good number of plants that produce black flowers? Well, nearly so. On inspection some of them are very dark shades of red or purple but the visual effect in the garden is black. Black tulips, black hollyhocks, black callas, black irises, and even black petunias are all available! A few plants produce dark purple or black stems that can also be noteworthy. Join us for a fascinating exploration of the blackest flowers of all, just in time for Halloween!
$20 plus GST for a 2 hour, live-streamed class. Registration is for a single student in one household. If multiple students will be viewing from the same location, each additional student is $10. Course fees are non-refundable. Class times are in Saskatchewan time - CST, no daylight savings.
Registration closes one hour before the class starts. Register here or email us at conference.events@usask.ca. Office hours are 8:00 am - 4:00 pm and any emails after this time will be answered the next business day.
About your Instructor
Lyndon Penner grew up in Saskatchewan and began gardening at a very young age. He began working in the nursery industry at the age of 16 and at 20 he began instructing horticultural classes. Now an independent landscape consultant and garden designer, Lyndon has been much in demand as a guest speaker for gardening groups and societies and has lectured at USask, UBC, Olds College, and the Calgary Zoo Botanic Garden. He has written for many gardening publications as well as three best-selling books about gardening in a short growing season. You may also have heard him talking about gardening on CBC radio. When not busy in his own garden or someone else's, Lyndon has worked as a botanical interpreter in Waterton Lakes National Park, as a tour guide at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, and is currently living in Saskatchewan wondering what's happening this summer (just like the rest of us!).
Format
This class is offered in an online, live-stream format that you can access from your computer, phone or tablet. Your distance class will include your instructor and their presentation live on-screen and the ability for you to ask questions through the course chat. You will not receive a recording nor handouts for this class, but we're confident you will get good educational value.
We've tested the technology in recent classes and our students report that it is quite simple to use both on computers and on personal devices like tablets and phones. We will send you instructions one hour before the class along with a contact help you in case there are any issues connecting. It's been remarkably stable for everyone with a strong internet connection. If you have a weak internet connection you might have audio problems, though we've only had this issue with people in isolated areas. Since there is a call-in option for sound, you will still be able to hear but you may not be able to see the instructor and slides if you have a poor internet connection.
