Animal and Poultry Science

Faculty in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science teach students in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Degree Program, and in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Programs are designed to give students broad knowledge of animal sciences and of the application of modern technology within agriculture systems. Programs are becoming broader in scope and new courses in pet and equine science are very popular. Students can also complete the pre-veterinary course requirements for the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. A strong interdisciplinary approach to learning in a supportive environment will provide you with a solid foundation for a wide range of career opportunities. Programs emphasize:

  • sustainable production systems and management
  • animal behaviour and welfare
  • biotechnology
  • genetics, molecular genetics
  • gut microbiology, pro- and pre-biotics
  • nutrition (biochemistry, health, feeds and feed evaluation, feed processing)
  • pasture management and forage production
  • pet and equine sciences
  • wildlife-agriculture interactions

Programs cover beef, dairy, swine, poultry, horses, sheep, fish, pets and wildlife.

AgBio students have a unique advantage in their studies with easy access to dairy, poultry, sheep, fish and metabolic teaching facilities located on-campus close to the state of the art Agriculture Building. The Department is undergoing a major infrastructure renewal cycle that includes a new facility for dairy on campus; a new beef research station, and the new Canadian Feed Research Centre, which will be a world class feed processing research and teaching centre.

The Department has extensive and high quality applied and basic research programs covering a wide range of topics in animal science and related areas, and maintains an excellent relationship with industry. Graduate students make an important contribution to the high research productivity. The department graduate program offering MSc and PhD degrees is highly regarded and sought after. Graduate student enrolment ranges between 50 and 60 students with a large number of students originating from all over the world.

The Department is a very pleasant and rewarding place to work and study in a very collegial and supportive environment. Our research and teaching programs are expanding and we welcome applications from undergraduate and graduate students.
