Meet Potentilla hudsonii

Meet Potentilla hudsonii, a new species for the province, named in 2018 by Dr. Barbara Errter, originally collected in 1969 by John Hudson north of Langham.

One unique specimen that finds its home at the W.P. Fraser Herbarium is this holotype of Potentilla hudsonii Ertter (175033). The holotype, chosen by the author at the time of publication, is the specimen they feel best represents the new species from the hundreds they surveyed. This new Potentilla was named and published in 2018 by Dr. Barbara Errter and was originally collected north of Langham along the North Saskatchewan River in June of 1969 by John Hudson. John Hudson’s contributions to the herbarium’s collection are a large asset thanks to their diversity and detail. Using herbarium specimens like this, is one-way new species are described since it’s the collected plants from the decades before that hold the information needed to bring together the recognition of a new species. This is just one of many special stories held at the W.P. Fraser Herbarium. You can read the publication here.
