The creation of the Canadian Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence (Centre) stems from a bilateral agreement between Canada and India, calling for the creation of two companion research centres, one in India and another in Canada.  The Centre, based at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), will partner with a like-minded centre at India’s National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM-K) in Kundli, India. The USask Centre is co-led by the College of Agriculture and Bioresources and the College of Engineering.

The Centre will allow Canada to lead in areas where it has distinctive strengths, while using the Canada–India partnership to access complementary capabilities, applications and markets. The partnership will support ecosystem development, trade stability and international collaboration mechanisms that advance shared food and nutritional security goals.

The Centre’s focus on research and innovation will allow Canada to capture more economic value within our world-leading pulse industry by connecting agricultural production with food-product development, advanced processing and extraction techniques and international market development. The Centre’s research and partnerships will support higher-value uses for Canadian pulse crops, create opportunities for producers and processors, attract investment and strengthen Canada’s export competitiveness.  As a training hub for the next generation of industry leaders, knowledge will be mobilized through the development of scientists, engineers, technicians, entrepreneurs and market specialists.
