Rachel joined the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the U of S in September 2014 as a Ph.D. student working in the area of poultry nutrition and gut health, under the supervision of Drs. Hank Classen and Andrew Van Kessel.
From Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, Rachel's held a life-long interest in animals whch led her to enroll in the pre-vet program at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. After learning about other ways to work with animals, Rachel's interest turned to research. She completed a 4th year honours project feeding lobster meal to laying hens and measuring pigmentation of the yolk. In 2013, Rachel completed an M.Sc. from Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture, with a thesis titled, "Evaluating canola (Brassica napus) meal and juncea (Brassica juncea) meal with or without supplemental enzymes for two commercial strains of laying hens."
Rachel received a Graduate Teaching Fellowship for the 2015-2016 academic year and has been organizing labs and guest lecturing for several poultry-related classes.
