The IRC Team
The NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Poultry Nutrition is held by Dr. Henry Classen and funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the University of Saskatchewan and several stakeholder organizations from the poultry industry.
The primary objective of the five-year research program is to improve the sustainability of Canadian poultry production through increased precision in diet formulation, enhanced efficiency of feed ingredient use, and the creation of feeding programs which enhance bird health and welfare, thus providing a safer and healthier product for Canadian consumers. These goals will be achieved by studying the rate and extent of protein and starch digestion using a variety of feed sources and poultry models.
The research program will support three Ph.D. and four M.Sc. programs, as well as three undergraduate research theses, while completing approximately 20 experiments using a combination of broiler chickens, broiler breeders, turkeys and table egg layers.
